Natural medicine is based on two fundamental principles, these are: 1) The body has the innate ability to heal itself 2) The body and mind are one in health
Your body knows what to do to prevent disease, just like a tree knows how to grow. Disease arises when a disruption occurs in the natural functioning of your body. This can be due to external influences such as in your living environment, diet, lifestyle, physical trauma, and external pathogens or it may results from internal influences such as emotional disturbances. These influences disturb and unbalance the delicate state of the body, which results in dis-ease.
Natural medicine aims at restoring balance in the body and mind by identifying the underlying cause of illness, and by promoting balance in the body to heal itself. When the body falls into a state of dis-ease, sometimes all that is needed is a push of the right buttons in order to remind the body how to heal itself. This may involve the use the following therapies:
*Acupuncture *Chinese herbal medicine *Cupping therapy and acupressure *Dietary therapy and clinical nutrition *Moxabustion and heat therapy
Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine treatment that involves the insertion of very fine, sterilised, single use needles at strategic points in the body along energy channels called meridians. When the flow of energy in these meridians becomes obstructed, disease occurs. Acupuncture helps unblock the flow of energy in the body, which signals the body to heal itself. Clinical studies have shown that acupuncture has a wide variety of effects on the body, including hormonal regulation, improving blood circulation, releasing natural opioids such as endorphins, and relieving emotional stress. Acupuncture is recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO) as an effective treatment for a large number of physical and emotional disorders, as proven in placebo-controlled trials.
Chinese herbal medicine is the most popular form of therapy in traditional Chinese medicine. It involves the practitioner prescribing a carefully designed herbal formula composed of around 12 to 16 herbal medicines tailored to your bodies imbalances. We prescribe powdered herbal medicines that are easy to administer. Chinese herbal medicines have been clinically proven to provide safe and effective treatment for a large range of disorders, from period pain to irritable bowel syndrome and sub-fertility.
Cupping therapy is an age-old healing therapy that has been practiced throughout Asia and Europe for centuries. This involves the placement of suction cups on the body to activate the lymphatic system, promote blood circulation, expel toxins, and promote deep healing. It is often applied with traditional acupressure, which is similar to acupuncture however it uses pressure instead of needles. Infant massage and acupressure may also be applied to young children to help in the management of a large range of disorders. Some of these techniques can be taught to parents.
Dietary therapy in Chinese medicine is similar to herbal medicine but uses common everyday foods to rebalance the body and treat disorders. This often includes conventional nutrition and supplementation. In addition, lifestyle advice is often provided to help remove the external causes of illness and change negative habits in the individual’s lifestyle. Particular dietary plans and exercises may be prescribed.
Moxabustion is a type of heat therapy that often accompanies acupuncture treatment. It involves burning a herb called mugwort above strategic regions or points of the body to stimulate the body to heal itself, improve circulation and relieve pain. Heat therapy may also include the use of mineral infrared heat lamp to improve circulation of blood and energy in the tissues and relieve pain.

“The human body is a part of the universe as a whole. It naturally functions and interrelates with the environment surrounding it, just like everything else in nature. Your body knows how to function correctly and is constantly healing itself when the body is in ease. When the body falls into a state of dis-ease, something has caused the body to full out of balance. Natural medicine aims at identifying the root cause of disease and at restoring balance in the body to remind the body of how to heal itself, rather than just covering the symptoms. Further treatments are required to consolidate the effects of the treatment and prevent further reoccurrence of disease. Once treatment is complete, you will have gained the knowledge of how to look after your body and mind to maintain optimal health.” Dr. Robert Gentile (TCM), Registered Doctor of Chinese Medicine
